Fancy a card full of black-and-white images but from an ultra-colourful camera? Look no further than the new Leica Monochrom à la carte. Mike has been turned loose on the options list...
David English is a well-known technology writer but has a longtime passion for Leica. He belongs to the one-camera school, something to which many of us aspire yet are distracted from constantly by our gear acquisition lust or, perhaps, our indecision. He’s also an ace exponent of black-and-white photography and has a preference for all things monochrome, particularly movies.
Special events at Brooklands Museum bring out the best in the British—their love of preserving old vehicles (or old anything for that matter)—and their tendency to form a club for the oddest activities. Military re-enactment clubs don’t immediately spring to mind but an event such as the Military Vehicles Day, last Sunday, brings together enthusiasts from all over the country. These dedicated individuals move around the country at weekends to support a wide range of period events.
George James published his excellent 50 Apo-Summicron images earlier today and I thought I would follow with some complementary shots from the Leica M246 Monochrom and my 28-35-50mm Tri-Elmar. Having the three focal lengths was an advantage, particularly when trying to get car pictures at close quarters. As George pointed out, though, it was big challenge to shoot the cars because of all the spectators milling around. Not really ideal conditions and, perhaps, we should have been there earlier in the day.
The English, by common assent, are mad. Or, perhaps, we should say eccentric. Noël Coward was in no doubt and nor should be any right-minded individual exposed to the English at play. Especially when the mid-day sun shines.
I am now really looking forward to getting my hands on the new Mark II Leica Monochrom. I thought the original was the bee's knees but I am persuaded that the CMOS version of this unique full-frame black-and-white shooter will bring along he legs, not to mention the bee's body.
