Strange birds in Melbourne take a sip

Macfilos Weekender with Jason Hannigan

Currently in the midst of a house move whilst we prepare to demolish and rebuild our family home, we installed the old bird bath in the new front yard.  Imagine my surprise when the first occupants were not of the avian persuasion, but rather of the Apis species.

Indeed, dusk resembled nothing more than a herd of undersized, six-legged “cattle” drifting in to take their fill at the water’s edge.  I was able to set up the Panasonic G9 and Olympus 40-150mm PRO with the 1.4 tele-converter for a session of ‘not-quite-macro’ bee spotting. They head off across the road and vanish into the twilight, but the hive can’t be too far away. I certainly hope these little guys continue to visit.
