Smaller iPad: Is there a demand for a middie?

Don’t get me wrong: I love my iPad. But I am still not used to its sheer size. As a netbook replacement it’s fine. But for carrying around, for reading and note taking it is large.

Late last year, when iPad rumours were rife, there was talk about a middie device with a screen size midway between the iPhone and the 9.7-in iPad. I can now see the possibility of real demand for such a smaller iPad. Something the size of the Kindle or the Sony Reader would be ideal in my view and I would readily lose the extra screen real estate in return for greater portability and handleability.

I am sure Apple is considering a new, smaller iPad and I am equally sure that it would be a major seller, probably eclipsing sales of the bigger model.
