Technology over the last century; adoption speeds up

Technology spreads faster today than every before. In 1900 fewer than one in ten households had access to electricity in the USA; now almost everyone has electricity. But this has been a relatively slow progress compared with newer developments such as computers, the internet and cellphones. Derek Thompson, writing in The Atlantic, discusses the impact of technology on the developed world over the past 100 years. If proof were needed, just look at this graph:
