Marco Arment of Instapaper has tested the new Apple Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit-Ethernet adaptor and come up with some surprising results. Transfer rate on his test connector averaged 941 Mbps compared with a lowly 94 Mbps for the old USB-Ethernet adaptor. Impressive. Wifi connections, even with the latest Airport Extreme, can manage only 118 Mpbs. A cable connection using the new adaptor is therefore dramatically faster whenever one is available. This is another reason I’m finding the single Thunderbolt port on the new MacBook Air a bit limiting in the absence of a good hub.
