Yesterday I was moaning, as usual, about the crush of applications wanting to store their little icons on my already crowded MacBook Air toolbar.
My friend Austin White of Thoughtfuldesign.net was quick to offer a solution, and what a solution it is. He suggested Bartender, a great little app that solves all my problems.
Bartender, which is still in beta but which appears to be me to be fully functional, can shunt off all your icons, including username, battery status and other system defaults, into a separate menu.
Click on the Bartender icon and the full set of icons is displayed in a new bar under the normal toolbar. It’s basically the double-header toolbar I suggested yesterday. Just look at my new slimmed-down toolbar. What a diet.

This is definitely an app I would recommend. As I said, it is still in beta so I don’t know what it will cost, but it’s free for the moment.
PS: Pietro Montalcino of Macography.net, ever the helpful soul, suggested my problems could be solved if I downloaded fewer apps. I don’t think he is serious.
