A full-frame DSLR, massive tele lens and a tripod would probably be ideal equiment for a studied shot of the full moon. I didn’t have the option when I saw the moon rising over the horizon on Mykonos earlier this week. All I had was my Leica Monochrom, no tripod and a couple of lenses. I screwed on the oldest lens in my collection, a 1974-vintage 90mm Tele-Elmarit, opened it wide, upped the ISO to 800 and grabbed this shot, hand held of course, at 1/1500s. As you can imagine, the poor old moon was a tiny speck in the frame but I cropped out 1/12th of the original shot and was amazed to find the amount of detail recorded by that old lens. It just goes to show that you don’t have to pay a fortune for some of the best lenswear you can get.
