Apple Event: Great expectations for September 9

Apple has named the day and the world is waiting to see what exciting new stuff is announced. It’s fairly certain we will see the next iPhone, which is rumoured to be coming in two screen sizes, 4.7in and 5.5in. I, for one, fancy a larger-screened phone so I will not need to carry both phone and iPad mini. I have lost count of how many people have asked when the new iPhone is coming and I sense there is even more pent-up demand than ever. It’s not surprising, since many people skip the S iteration and keep the iPhone 4 or 5 until the big change comes. This year it will be a strange launch, especially if, as expected, the large phone is delated until the end of the year.

We can also expect to see final news on OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, both of which will become available free to users in September or October. There are not going to be many surprises here. So what will be the big news on September 9?

John Gruber, an Apple pundit who has a reputation for being on the inside track, has let it slip that there will be a “wrist wearable thing” to be announced next month. So far I have been mightily unimpressed with smart watches but I’m expecting Apple to do things properly and produce a device that will catch the imagination. An iWrist thingumabob and an iPhone phablet: Now that sounds like my sort of combo.
