I feel truly sorry for British photographer David Slater. He gets his camera stolen by a monkey. Said simian goes on to take a succession of selfies, not all of them in focus it has to be admitted. But, to its credit, the animal eventually got the hang of the camera. Then, to discover that this photograph is not Slater’s copyright is soul destroying. Wikipedia has ruled that the impressive selfie is in the public domain and its view is supported by the United States Copyright Office: “The Office will not register works produced by nature, animals or plants. Likewise, the Office cannot register a work purportedly created by divine or supernatural beings.”
So much for that. But I feel for David Slater. In future I shall take care not to let my camera get highjacked by a geranium or a bonsai tree.
