After collecting a review V-Lux from Leica this morning my first shot had to be at that enticing 400mm. After all, what’s the point in having a super zoom if you don’t use it? This happy witch has his (her, its?) eagle eye on me but I was able to shoot above the heads of the Covent Garden crowds and get a shot that wouldn’t normally be easily arranged with a 35mm or 50mm prime. Sometimes a zoom can come in handy as I keep reminding myself.
I shall be trying out the V-Lux over the weekend, first at the Regent Street car show and then, on Sunday, following the RAC Bonham’s veteran car run from London to Brighton. I reckoned a camera with a decent zoom would come in handy, especially on the veteran run, so Leica obligingly provided one of the first V-Luxes for the occasion.
The V-Lux 4, with its 600mm zoom has been a popular camera in the Leica lineup for precisely these reasons, its super range. While the new V-Lux, a larger camera overall, has to settle for a more modest range of 25-400mm, there isn’t much lost because the four-times-bigger 1in sensor is going to capture more detail and the shots at 400mm will allow more cropping opportunities to mimic the previous 600mm.
More on the V-Lux in the coming days.
