Apple Watch: First orders at 8.05 am go through at top speed. No glitches, painless transaction

Sad but true: At precisely 8.01 this morning my finger was hovering over the keyboard waiting for the Apple Store to return to life. New goodies were promised, namely the MacBook Retina and the much-discussed Apple Watch. It was the Watch I was after.

This is a well-rehearsed ritual whenever there is a new hot product from Apple. Today, the store was four minutes late coming on line but when it did everything was running smoothly. Within seconds I had bought my first Apple Watch. Untold millions will follow.

Right up to the last minute I was unsure which type of band to go for. I was certain I wanted the larger 42mm case since I am used to larger watches; I will be surprised if it is too big for me. But the band was a different matter. The stainless steel link version would be my normal choice but I really do want to see how well it is made before deciding.

In the end I make the easy choice of taking the standard 42mm Watch with a black sports band. I reasoned that, even if I subsequently buy an accessory strap, the sport band is a good alternative and it is something to sell on with the watch when Apple Watch 2 arrives.

Now all I have to do is wait until the promised delivery date of between April 24 and May 8.
