There have been strong rumours of a new Apple wireless keyboard for some months but confirmation comes by way of FCC filings disclosed by 9to5mac.com. There’s also an improved Magic Mouse to look forward to. Both new devices will feature low-energy Bluetooth 4.2 for greater reliability and improved battery life. I am hoping that the improvement to the Magic Mouse will go beyond the electronics. All the Magic Mouses I’ve used have an annoying tendency to lose their bottoms frequently. It is one of the few misses by Jony Ive and his design team, an apparent inability to incorporate a bottom that stays in place. So, a faster and more economical Magic Mouse 2 will be welcomed, especially with a secure bottom.
I chucked my "Magic Mouse" into my magic dustbin and opted for the "Trackpad" from 2009 onwards… I am still on my first one and it is absolutely brilliant. I bought it with my 27" iMac and my old MacPro is operated through VNC… I now have the cylinder version of the MacPro and my daughter has the old iMac… She uses a Logitech mouse and I use one too on the occasions that I want direct access to the old MacPro.
So for me, the rumours of a new Magic Mouse are a bit "meh".
If you like the track pad on the MacBook/Air/Pro then the Magic TrackPad is the ideal desktop iteration.
Just my tuppence worth Mike… (and Bernie) 🙂
I agree. I’ve had a trackpad for the pas five years and it works well. I still cling to the mouse, though and, here I am on my travels with a Magic Mouse despite having the new and brilliant trackpad on the little MacBook. I’ll never learn. I suppose, though, it’s a very individual preference.
Based on the rumors, the new devices will have built-in (non replaceable) rechargeable batteries. This should solve the issue with the bottom coming loose on the mouse.
Thanks for pointing this out, Bernie. I knew there was something I’d overlooked. Since the current Magic Mouse eats batteries, and the keyboard isn’t much better, this will be a genuine step forward. As long as Apple doesn’t charge £99/$99/€99 to replace the rechargeable when they are knackered.
