Macfilos: Eight years of blogging started with an iPhone 3G

Who would have thought that the iPhone back in 2008 would become the most popular camera in the world? This shot of a Greek moonscape over Sounio, Attica, by Kostas Georgilakis, was taken with an iPhone 6. it was the earlier iPhone 3G that launched Macfilos.

How do you start a blog? More to the point, where do you start? Writing the first post is often the most difficult, a matter of jumping in at the deep end and hoping for the best. In the case of Macfilos, I made an instant decision eight years ago, August 2008, and wrote the first article on this day in that month: iPhone 3G, What the original should have been.

You see, my original intention was to write about technology and reviews and news about Apple products dominated the first few years. Indeed, the name of the blog was centred on this primary interest. I had avoided the original iPhone in 2007, largely because it didn’t offer fast data. But the arrival of the 3G in August 2008 set me off on what turned out to be eight years of almost daily commentary.

Gradually, over the ensuing years, I took to writing more about photography and developed my lifelong interest in cameras and street photography. The blog has grown. So today I opened a bottle of fizzy water to celebrate. Here’s to the first eight years of Macfilos.

  1. Mike,
Congratulations on reaching 8 years of writing your blog, "Macfilos".

George often passes his laptop over to me when he see something of particular interest.
All well written with a sense of humour and beautiful photography.
    Thank you.

    • Thank you, Juliet, your kind words are appreciated. As you know I get a lot of inspiration from your effervescent husband and he has become a good friend.

  2. Happy Birthday/Anniversary Mike!
This post does address my curiosity on the name – I have been a Mac owner since 1987 when the earth’s crust was still hardening. Your posts have been most helpful since I discovered them earlier this year when jumping into the Fuji X world with an XPro 2 and lightening my pack of all my Canon gear. Many thanks!

    • Thank you, Peter. The Mac connection is now very tenuous although I do try to do a few posts and, perhaps, next Tuesday’s iPhone 7 announcement will fuel my enthusiasm. As it happens, the London Mac User Group, of which I am a member, have been in the habit of selecting one or more Macfilos posts to reproduce in their monthly newsletter. This has been going on for several years but, recently, they have been struggling to find something that isn’t photography related. I shall have to try harder.

  3. Congratulations Mike!
I always wondered about the genesis of the Macfilos name. Now I know!
I enjoy reading your blog everyday and look forward to more cooperative ventures in the future.

    • And thank you for your support, Kai. I enjoy reading your adventures and your incredibly sensible attitude to your gear.

  4. Congratulations Mike on 8 years of Macfilos !!
Always interesting reviews and great reading. I’m looking forward to the next 8 years.

    • Many thanks, George. It is largely thanks to the encouragement of friends such as you that I have had the gumption to keep the blog running for so long. It’s a tough task thinking of something to write every day. Sometimes I wake without an idea in my head. Invariably, though, something sets me off during the day and I have a post ready for the following morning.

  5. Mike , congratulations on 8 years of Macfilos. It’s a big effort to keep any blog going-I know- it’s an even bigger effort to keep up the quality and quantity as you have done.

    • Thank you John but don’t forget your regular contributions also help enormously. Without you, Bill, William and a few others my task would be more difficult. Just when I am cudgelling my brains for a morning post up pops something from Australia, Dublin or darkest Frimley to head me off in the right direction.

  6. Mike…

Here’s to the next eight years and many thanks for the last year that I have been reading…

    … my favourite tech blog.

    Stephen
