The 24MP Leica SL2-S, which succeeded the original SL, gets new firmware to enhance operation. It offers noticeably improved performance, especially in the field of video recording. A new autofocus algorithm significantly improves focus tracing and enhances the camera’s eye, face, head and body detection.

In addition, a new Image Overlay function (selectable in the camera menu) allows the camera position to be aligned based on a previously recorded image, which is displayed as a transparent overlay in the EVF or on the LCD. Composing images in extremely low light will also be made easier by the new Enhanced Live View feature.

The highly advanced video functions of the SL2-S are where this firmware update truly comes into its own: in addition to the camera’s existing recording modes and ability to capture 4K 30p/25p 4:2:2 10-bit (internal and external) videos, the Leica SL2-S will now also capture 10- bit recordings in the HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding) video compression standard (h.265) at 4:2:0 and frames rates of up to 59.94p. There will also be the option of recording Long GOP 150Mbps footage onto an SD card (as opposed to the previous 400Mbps 10bit 4:2:2). The upload of individual Look Up Tables (LUTs) to the camera via the SD card expands its creative possibilities in video mode. Furthermore, the new automatic Follow Focus allows the user to define a maximum of three focus points for automatic focus shift during video recording.

To ensure a pro-level exposure evaluation, the SL2-S will now offer the option of displaying a waveform monitor. In addition, a colour bar with audio signal will be available as a reference for correct colour grading and sound editing in post-production. To minimise the risk of data loss in the event of power failure, the Segmented Video function allows you to record footage in one-minute sub-sequences stored as individual files within the camera.
These are just some of the many enhancements now available for the Leica SL2-S. The full list of added features can be found in the firmware installation guide, available here – which is also where the new firmware update 2.0 for the Leica SL2-S can be downloaded free of charge.

A cup of coffee works wonders in supporting Macfilos
Did you know that Macfilos is run by a dedicated team of volunteers? We rely on donations to help pay our running costs. And even the cost of a cup of coffee will do wonders for our energy levels.
Probably barking up the wrong tree here, but an update of the trusty SL for better autofocus would also be most welcome. The processor is not that different. One may dream…
Dream on – this is not Fujifilm but I still love Leica – but a wee bit reluctantly. I think, after much reflection – since the 1980s, that I love their glass and simplicity of interface too much to move onto a different mistress. It is like an addiction but the only cure is another lens.
Firmware updates from Leica are a rarely enjoyed experience. Try panasonic instead but that Leica minimalistic interface that gets out of your way is like a siren call to the rocky shore with. countless sunken vessels.
The eye AF is really sticky and very usable on SL2-S. At least as good a Nikon Z7 in today’s informal testing with a live, moving model…..
A major firmware update which makes the camera a more compelling and competitive option. The new Leica SL 24-70mm f/2.8 to be announced on May 6 would be a nice pairing.
I suspect it could be offered as a kit with the SL.
Wonder if it is made by Signa or Panasonic or, even, the mystery factory which made the TL lenses… I feel certain it isn’t made in Germany.
I am also certain it is not made in Germany – however, it is great for Leica to offer options. It will also be a great kit lens with the SL2 family and hopefully be priced well as a kit. Looking forward to the review:)
Most rumors so far seem to point to Sigma… which is fine… let’s especially also hope it is a lens uniquely designed for Leica and not simply a rebadged Sigma one that is being sold for 3 times the regular price…
I also think sigma is the most likely candidate but from leaked photos there is a difference in the body, no AF/MF toggle for instance. I suspect it will have some Leica tweaks and I hope it can be priced around the same as the Panasonic 24/90. We might never get official confirmation of who makes it. Not long to wait now.
This is all good news, now we just need that long awaited CL2.
Almost certainly the Sigma, identical specs except for the AF/MF toggle and the Leica weighing 21g more. In the US the Sigma is priced at $1,059. Let’s see which price Leica comes up with…
I agree on Sigma, but it does seem to be a redesign with a new body to match other Leica SL zooms, the absence of the focus toggle and, I think, a different number of aspherical elements. There could also be some Leica tweaking… As for price, the Leica 24/70 is over twice as expensive as the Sigma. It may well perform better and, of course, the Leica name will ensure higher residuals. But I will be very interested to read a back-to-back comparison. Maybe Jono should get his hands on the Sigma.
Do I hear innocent whistling from the Leica sales team?
