The latest Lumix camera, the BS1H, doesn’t even take photographs. It’s one of the new breed of dedicated video cameras that is becoming increasingly popular.
Normally, this Box Lumie wouldn’t warrant much attention here on Macfilos because of its lack of a stills capability. Except, that is, for the interesting fact that it features the L-mount. Internally, it has the same 24MP sensor and processing capabilities as the conventional S1H, a camera that does both photography and videography really well. If you want a foot in both worlds, and a camera that competes with Leica’s SL2-S, then you’ll prefer the LUMIX S1H.
This new block on the block is wholly dedicated to video, with pro connectors, including an Ethernet port, and a focused set of controls. The boxy styling appears to be the latest fad.
My take on this is that it broadens the appeal of the L-mount and has the potential to attract a new market. In time, I suspect, this will be good for Panasonic, Sigma and Leica.
If you want to know more and enjoy an entertaining half-hour, you can do no better than watch these videos from DPReview, Lok Cheung, and the irrepressible Kai Wong.

And now that Leitz Cine is in the LMA it makes a little more sense…
Mike I agree with you and think this is brilliant for broadening the L mount appeal. Video is outpacing stills interest in society. Panasonic certainly knows video which makes L mount have a much broader market opportunity.
I am a stills man, but L mount is certainly building amazing head of steam in an amazing short time – thanks to Panasonic and Sigma. The alliance was a brilliant move by Leica. I could not be happier.
