A question of focus: It’s one in the eye for the editor

Things might be a bit quiet on Macfilos during the next couple of weeks. Head cook and bottle washer Evans is facing two cataract operations on consecutive Fridays from today. In line with popular prejudice, the editor has two eyes so has decided on two separate ops, although many brave souls get both peepers done on the same day.

It’s not a big deal, of course, and cataracts are something most of us experience at some stage in our lives. Indeed, we’ve heard that many of our readers have already been under the knife. It must be contagious.

As a result, screen time will have to be curtailed over the next fortnight, depending on how things go. But, in any case, it won’t do any harm to soft-pedal on the squinting for a few days.

Please don’t send out the search dogs if a few days go by without news from Macfilos, although the brandy is always appreciated. Normal focus will be resumed as soon as possible.

  1. Glad to hear the first went well and I look forward to hearing of the successful second. And don’t forget in the kingdom of the blind the one eyed man is king!

  2. Glad to hear that you are back in the game. Hopefully you will be fixed soon, and I do hope the second op goes well.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  3. Good luck with your cataract ops Mike … Mine are ‘stable’ and have been for 10 years so no surgery necessary. Enjoy your break 😉

  4. Best of luck with your operation. My mum had her 2 eyes done and had an eagle sight afterward. You’ll have a 47 Mpixel eyesight in a few days

  5. Great news that one has already gone well. I think you will be astonished at your fresh sight. Enjoy a well deserved break.

  6. Dear Mike,
Fantastic news one done and so successful, one to go, then a brilliant new World.
    Very best wishes,
Don & Jo (Who is still waiting for hers to be done)

  7. Best of luck with the operation, Mike. You know where we are if you need us. I have had 3 eye operations (two for detached retina – the more serious one) and one for cataracts. The first detached retina and the cataract operation were while I was in Qatar. Luckily, Laura was with me in Qatar, particularly for the detached retina one, as post op I was seeing two of everything, which made going through doors a bit of an adventure. The cataract op has a very quick recovery time and you should be back to normal in a few days. Laura sends her best regards.

  8. Hi Mike,
Wishing you a speedy recovery and fully restored vision. Perhaps, given your soon to be brilliant peepers, it might be good to re-evaluate the .58x M viewfinder?

    Very best,
    Frank

    • Thanks, everyone. I’m back at work after the first op, which went so smoothly I didn’t know anything about it. Now I’m one-eyed for a time. Oddly, I had a long discussion with the surgeon about my dominant eye, since they prefer to do the dominant one first. I didn’t know which was which with any certainty. All the has-hoc, internet-gleaned tests determine that my right eye is the dominant one. However, I’e never been able to use that for photography. As a result, I use my left eye and his means my nose is always pressing against the back of the camera (with unfortunate results if touch [nose] is enabled. He therefore decided to do the left eye first and, since this was the one with bad long-distance vision, I’ve come away with a big improvement. Once the blur wears off after a day or two I should have perfect long sight. With luck, in future, I will need to wear glasses only for reading and working on the computer.

      • Thank you for the update. Articles often appear here written as long form conversations. Or perhaps I read too much into it. Be that as it may get well soon Mike and hopefully the next operation goes uneventfully. Take care.

  9. Eyes are precious. Take great care of them, Mike. I am sure a member of staff will read to you anything urgent or special. Unless they are all still on furlough 😂 wishing you a very clear future.

  10. Good luck Mike and I’m sure it’ll be all better after that. Must keep reminding myself to give your website a break and not get disappointed that there is nothing to read 😂

  11. All the best! (..Mine went without hitch ..but that was only one, not two!) Didn’t improve my colour vision, but I can now read barcodes at 200 paces ..and the volume display on the amp under the TV at the other side of the room! ..Keep smiling – David.

  12. Wife just completed one surgery, wait after holidays for other, I playing roll of step and fetch it,so just chill take the drops and you be good to go.

  13. Hope it goes well, Mike. A friend who had both his done a couple of months ago – but a few weeks apart – couldn’t believe the transformation. Colours much, much brighter and now goes out of his way to find TV programmes with tiny subtitles to show off about being able to read.
