Leica Q2 Monochrom Reporter now on sale

13

Following the launch of the Leica Q2 Reporter three months ago, the black-and-white version, the Leica Q2 Monochrom Reporter is now on sale.

The new camera mirrors the businesslike exterior of the colour version, with Kevlar “body armour” and a dark-green paint with special abrasion-resistant properties. It is differentiated solely by the laser-engraved “Monochrom” script on the lower edge of the display.

While the sensor has the same resolution as the standard Q2, the absence of a colour array ensures greater detail rendition and increased sensitivity. The camera is now available from UK Leica dealers at a recommended retail price of £5,250, including 20 per cent VAT.

  1. Leica prices are going up in the US on April 1. Better buy this reporter asap in case it’s price goes up.

    • Only the regular Q2 goes up in price (after already having its price increased twice last year…). The biggest price increase is the Summilux-SL 50mm f1.4. Up $600.

  2. Oh, this on-going dilemma as to whether to buy just one fixed lens camera! But would I just end up cropping or using in-camera digital zoom (e.g. The Fuji). I am not in the Q stratosphere, but should it be Fuji, or Ricoh, or the CL with a fixed lens, or……….. Any help, anyone?

    • Well, for what it’s worth… the Ricoh is an excellent choice if you can manage without an EVF. It is light, very compact for APS-C and has an excellent lens. But as an all-round camera without compromise, the Fuji is probably a better bet. But it’s heavier and as easy to keep in your pocket “just in case”. For me, the CL is off the agenda until I see what they are going to do with the APS-C range.

    • Despite all the uncertainty around the APSC line, I would still buy a CL, though probably a pre-owned one.

It will take lenses from Sigma and Leica that are designed for the CL, or with an adapter you can use any M lens and you can still use the big boy L alliance lenses designed for the SL and SL2/S.

If you want fixed lens and autofocus I would look at the Sigmas (16, 30, 56) or a TL23. Probably you safest bet would be a CL + M adaptor + M lens of you choice.

      • I personally will probably continue with the Leica CL for the foreseeable future, the Fuji’s and the Sony A7C look good on paper but I don’t believe they are truly better than the Leica CL, I might add a Fuji X100V though if they are ever in stock again…

        • You can order the Fuji x100v and get it when it comes in. That is what I did. There are people on wait lists that get filled when stock arrives. This is a common problem according to my camera store due to shortages of popular cameras and lenses. If you are not in the queue you may wait a long time. I got mine in February and have loved the camera. It is like owning a smaller and lighter Q-I used to own the Q but I much prefer a 35mm for general use and the Q was too big for my pocket. The Ricoh takes fabulous images but I hated not having a viewfinder so flushed it after 6 months of stress with it. For me, the Fujifilm x100v is the most perfect compromise for a pocket camera plus is so reasonably priced considering its features. Most reasonable camera stores will let you cancel your order if you change your mind.

    • Hi John,
Your question is too simplistic to respond to as that is like asking what is the best lens for street photography.
Do you want it to be somewhat pocketable. What is your most used focal length. Often, experienced photographers take at least 75 percent of their images with one focal length. For me, that is 50mm. I did not get on with the 28mm Q as a cropped 28mm does not in any way look like a 50mm to the knowledgeable eye. However, I can do a mild crop on 35mm and be content. Cropping at 50mm and longer focal lengths is a lot less obvious in general unless it is a portrait. So I, at least, need a lot more information on your needs before I can begin to provide suggestions to consider.

  3. As somebody said on Leica Rumors: “A new CL2 will be a better reporter tool.”. I could not agree more. About the Q2 Monochrom Reporter, not in the market for one (I had the original Q, sold it and have not missed it even once) and I also feel they are overdoing it with the Reporter concept (3rd Reporter camera in hardly over a year), hopefully it does not lead to Reporter fatigue… I came very close to buying a fixed lens camera again though, a few days ago I wanted to buy the Fuji X100V, it would have been an impulse buy but it was back-ordered everywhere…

    • I purchased the x100v and love 💕 it, I have it in my jacket pocket and have captured images I would have missed out on. I mostly use the evf but the optical finder is a nice option at times. The colours are gorgeous. I now wish I had pulled the trigger when it came out.

  4. The “dark green pain” is brilliant. I strongly suspect it was meant to be paint but it got me laughing which is good for health. I do not like green unless it grows so I am not tempted by this camera.

    • Ah, now who can I blame for that, I wonder. I’d better alter it. But I agree, it’s a Freudian slip…

And it’s not the only mistake. What was published today was an unfinished prototype article! I went in to change “pain” and found the whole thing a mess. I must have inadvertently set an earlier version for publication. I’d better go back to the drawing board…
