Many MacFilos readers over the years will have visited the Leicaphilia blog, which was launched eight years ago. Full of insight into the world of Leica, the site was unique in that we never knew the author’s name.
I stayed anonymous; I wasn’t interested in pimping my work or making money. I just wanted to share some thoughts about photography, which I found miraculous on so many levels. My actual name is Tim Vanderweert. Might as well finally take credit.
I’ve been following Leicaphilia for most of that time and have exchanged emails from time to time with Tim, mainly when we reproduced linked articles.

Sadly, Tim Vanderweert is dying at age 64 after a long fight with cancer, and he published his last post, All Good Things Must End, yesterday. Our thoughts are with you, Tim, and thank you for enhancing our lives with your articles and photographs over the past eight years. I’ll leave the last word to you:
It has been wonderful spending time with the people I love. It’s been a fun time – lots of laughing at the absurdity of it all and lots of gratitude for all the love sent my way. As for Leicaphilia readers, you’ve made my last few years much more enriching than they would have been otherwise. Thank you.
A cup of coffee works wonders in supporting Macfilos
Did you know that Macfilos is run by a dedicated team of volunteers? We rely on donations to help pay our running costs. And even the cost of a cup of coffee will do wonders for our energy levels.
Tim and his blog has been quite a ray of sunshine over the years. His opinions and mine often jived (and just as often didn’t) but he was entertaining as well as informative. I admit to getting a little bleary-eyed when he got into philosophy but, well, he knew that and he didn’t mind. His book “Car Sick” was surprisingly good and I’m happy to own a copy and to have been one of the early supporters.
If you haven’t read his blog, do yourself a favor and bookmark it. Go to it occasionally and roam through the archives. It’s bound to give you a laugh or a fit of apoplexy. Both of which are good for you.
That is sad. He is a good writer, and had interesting things to say about photography.
Yes, sad indeed.
Well here’s a chap whose writings and musings on photography I would have liked to have come across earlier. The other was Bill Jay. Sad that all good things must end.
