Sirui, one of the world’s leading cine lens manufacturers, becomes the ninth member of the L-Mount Alliance since the launch of the lens-mount standard at Photokina in 2018. In addition to the newcomer, the alliance consists of the founding members Leica Camera AG, Sigma, and Panasonic, as well as Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH, DJI, Astrodesign, Samyang Optics, and Blackmagic Design.
Leica Camera AG developed the L-Mount with the aim of providing customers with a future-proof, bayonet mount system of lenses that would fulfil the needs of photographers and filmmakers.
Importantly, all L-Mount cameras can use all lenses made by the different partners in the alliance, without requiring adapters. There are no functional limitations, which demonstrates one of the many benefits of having a common bayonet. An expanding list of lenses to fit the L-mount also encourages other camera manufacturers to join the partnership.
Valentino Di Leonardo, who is the Managing Expert of Technology & Licensing at Leica Camera AG explained: “The L-Mount Alliance stands for openness, innovation, and the highest quality in photography. By joining the L-Mount Alliance, Sirui will be able to develop new products with the L-Mount which will present benefits for a wide range of photo and video applications.
By leveraging its proprietary brand, independent technological innovations, vertically integrated supply chain, and cost advantages, Sirui is set to significantly enhance the L-Mount Alliance lens ecosystem. We aim to introduce a broader range of outstanding, high-value L-mount lenses to the market.”
Sirui will expand and enhance the L-Mount Alliance
Sirui will bring a new perspective and different expertise to the Alliance, to help continue to improve the L-Mount system. The goal is to provide photographers and filmmakers with an even more comprehensive and flexible system that meets the highest standards.
Li Jie, founder and CEO at Sirui Optical, said “Sirui is a globally recognised brand in optical imaging, offering a diverse product line up that includes optical lenses and photography and videography equipment. Our company operates with its headquarters in China and has subsidiaries in the United States, Germany, and Japan.
“With its in-house optical R&D and manufacturing facilities, Sirui has established a fully integrated system encompassing research, production, and sales, with a distribution network spanning over sixty countries and regions worldwide.
“Together, we aim to provide photographers and filmmakers with an even more comprehensive and flexible system that meets the highest standards.”
Clarity or confusion?
The challenge for the ever-expanding universe of L-mount lens manufacturers will be how to position the many choices available in such a way that buyers can easily understand its value proposition.
Too many unstructured and unclear choices can lead to confusion about expectations, causing buyers to look elsewhere. Let’s hope the L-Mount alliance understands the need for clarity and the need to prune lenses that don’t fit with the overall mission.
