Leica launches compact Vario-Elmarit-SL 28-70 f/2.8 ASPH zoom

Leica today announces a new general-purpose standard zoom, the Vario-Elmarit-SL 28-70 f/2.8 ASPH. It is the most compact and lightweight zoom in the SL system and offers a constant fast aperture of f/2.8 throughout the range. In comparison with other zoom lenses in the range, it foregoes the wider 24mm starting point in the interests of lower weight and size. The company claims that the new lens blends versatility with exceptional imaging performance.

The Vario-Elmarit-SL 28-70 f/2.8 ASPH is launched at an attractive (for Leica) price of £1,650.

The lens system comprises 16 elements in 12 groups, with three aspherical surfaces to enhance image quality and precision.

Compact

With its magnesium and aluminium all-metal housing, the new lens is protected from dust and water splashes. It weighs 572g (613g with hood) and is compact, with a length of 102mm (139mm with hood) and a maximum diameter of 72mm. The filter thread is 67mm in diameter. Minimum focus distance is 19cm at 28mm and 38cm at 70mm.

The electronically controlled aperture enables half or third-stop values to be selected down to a minimum aperture of f/22. According to Leica, “the fast focus system consistently delivers precise and reliable focus”. Autofocus and manual focus options are set from the camera.

The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 28–70 f/2.8 ASPH will be available worldwide in Leica Stores, in the Leica Online Store, and from authorised dealers from the 12 June 2025. It can be purchased individually or as part of a kit with the SL3-S. The recommended retail price for the lens is £1,650 | €1,950 including VAT. The recommended retail price for the SL3-S Vario Kit 28–70 is £5,590 | €6,500.00, including VAT.
