For the first time in the UK, Leica Gallery London is proud to present works from Taras Bychkoās series āSykhivā, shot in Lviv, Ukraine in 2020, and āOut of Timeā, taken throughout Ukraine between 2018-2020 under the idea of erased by time.
Ukrainian Taras Bychko began his professional life as a legal advisor. His career path dramatically changed when he purchased a camera, following the birth of his first child. Since then, Bychko has developed a photographic style which lies somewhere between documentary and fine art images. He shoots in both black & white and colour film.
Sykhiv
Lviv is known for its rich history, architecture, stone houses, coffee, and chocolate. It is one of the most visited tourist cities in the Ukraine. And within Lviv, you can discover the neighbourhood of Sykhiv. Bychko referrs to it as the āsleepingā neighbourhood. It is also where he was born.
It is worlds away from the general glitz of Lviv, and is full of authentic daily life, demonstrated by the existence of its ārealā Ukrainian inhabitants. At the heart of his work is a desire to pay visual homage to the preservation of fragile memories. He feels it is important for him to permanently document the rapidly changing urban landscape before those memories are lost and erased by time.
Out of Time
Similarly, āOut of Timeā acts as a kind of homage. It serves to highlight how time does not seem to progress. Despite the economic, cultural and social changes which have developed since the 1960s, it is not possible to avoid the legacy of the former Soviet regime. This work is about how the past lives on, almost untouched by the present.
Taras Bychko now lives and works in the UK. He is the author of two books: Sykhiv (Lviv, 2020) and Two Rooms (Lviv, 2021). He has been working as a curator of photo projects at the Lviv Art Centre since 2021. Taras Bychko is also the recipient of several prizes within the last decade. His work has been published globally in The Guardian, LFI, Burn Magazine, National Geographic, Lens Culture, Fisheye Magazine, and other publications.
The exhibition includes 17 of his photographs, with all works for sale and prices starting at £1,800 plus VAT.
