OS 4.0: What I would like to see

Author: Michael Evans

Tomorrow's media event will introduce the much-anticipated mobile OS 4.0 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. This is going to be a major revision of the three-year-old touch OS: we're jumping from 3.2 to 4.0 after all. Multi-tasking is almost certain, if for no other reason that the competition, in particular Android, make this a selling point.

In common with many other commentators I really would like to see a unified mailbox and better syncing options, ideally with MobileMe. Many more people will now leave their MacBooks at home in favour of the iPad and it is increasingly anachronistic to have to cable up to iTunes every day.

Maybe, too, we will see "iPhone" dropped from the name of the operating system. After all, this is now a genuine mobile alternative to OS X and needs a wider mandate.
