MacBook Pro Deliveries: Volcano dust delays new Apples

Author: Michael Evans

Having got my body back to the UK after four days of trekking across Europe, I was not surprised to see that Apple's deliveries have also fallen foul of the Great Dust. My new MacBook Pro 13.3-in 2.66GHz, tricked out with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, is still stuck somewhere, presumably in Ireland.

Shipped to LONDON, GB 16 Apr 2010
Estimated Delivery Date (Subject to change) 19 Apr 2010 (Subject to change)
Current Delivery Status Shipment delayed due to weather conditions – please contact carrier for update 18 Apr 2010

I suppose it's not surprising, but there must be many eager punters disappointed by the non-appearance of their new toy. And it's an indication of what must be happening throughout the economy. My Piel Frama case for my (not yet purchased) iPad is also stuck somewhere in a Spanish despatch depot. All this is insignificant when compared to the plight of countless thousands of air passengers, as I know from bitter personal experience, but it will take weeks for the backlog of commercial deliveries to clear. Any bets on when my MB Pro will arrive?

  1. Well I received mine this afternoon at 2pm. So there is hope for you all yet. I ordered mine on the 14th and on the 15th they automatically canceled the order and upgraded the mac to the new model. Just had to wait ages because of the volcano.

BUT it’s here and i’m happy.

  2. I’ve got the same issue, but can’t even track where it is!

No carrier tracking number for me, and the reference number won’t work on either UPS or TNT. I’m guessing it’s still in Shanghai.

The worst part? I order a MBP a while ago, received it on the 12th April. And yes, on the 13th they upgraded everything to the i7/5 processors! So I returned that MBP no problem and immediately ordered the new one.

What do I have for my plight? Nothing but a wait with no inkling of how long. Damn you Volcano. Maybe we need to encourage more symbolic virgin sacrifice volcano slinging…

  3. AH! It’s in Korea now?! It flew back to Shanghi then onto Korea. I know packages take odd routes in order to have certain parts of the package added but is this normal?

  4. As long as it’s a standard configuration you’re better off to do this, I think. But I know from experience that upgrades such as adding 4G RAM are not generally available in stores. They might just be stocking the 256GB SSD model but it is unlikely at this stage.

  5. Also, I thought I’d mention – My order has mysteriously disappeared from my Apple order account page. I can’t explain it. Has that happened to anyone else? I’m tempted to just cancel the order if possible and just buy in store. (although, because I purchased the mac a day before the new macs were released they upgraded me for no extra charge)

  6. Mine says the exact same on the UPS tracking system Ravi. We must be in the same shipment batch. Fingers crossed they send the package via rail or ship or something, because this ‘closed airspace’ thing doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon and I’m without a computer. sigh.
