Reader Ravi, who is also waiting for his new MacBook Pro, did what I should have thought of doing and tracked the shipping. This is what he found:

Another contributor, mdanie2 has received similar tracking details but is confused because his order has mysteriously disappeared from his Apple Store account page. However, he's pleased that despite ordering the day before the new models were announced he was upgraded to the later model (which, I think, is official Apple policy–after all, you could return your computer and buy a new one if you had to). He's thinking of cancelling the order and going to the store to buy one. In my case, though, this isn't possible because of the upgrades to memory and SSD which are not in-store options.
We'll just have to wait for the dust to clear, but no doubt there will be big backlogs and our delivery dates are becoming increasingly uncertain. If only I'd known on Saturday I could have diverted my car to Cologne and brought the computer back with me. Only joking.
