WWW is 20 today, many happy returns, Sir Tim

Thanks to TechCrunch for reminding me that today is the 20th anniversary of the first web page. The internet was born when Sir Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first page, a placeholder, on 6 August 1991. It hardly seems credible that it is as recent as that.

The web is such a part of everyday life that it’s hard to remember life before. The invention of W3 was one of those enabling moments of history and, as an innovation, it is right up there with the giants of telephone, radio and television. I’d go so far as to say it is even more important than television in shaping the world we live in. So, many happy returns, Sir Tim.

In case you’re wondering, this historic placeholder text is still there and, what’s more, the hyperlinks still work. Pay a visit here

Here is the original overview of the web, signed by Tim Berners-lee
