Kindle Fire: DOA or another success for Amazon

We all know what Steve Jobs thinks about seven-inch tablets:

7-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad. These are among the reasons that the current crop of 7-in tablets are going to be DOA—dead on arrival.

In a few hours Amazon will unveil its 7-inch Kindle Tablet, said to be called the Fire. If it is only half decent and at a rock-bottom price, it will certainly cause upset in the market. It is being said the new device is a stopgap, very similar to the BlackBerry PlayBook, and that a new market-beating Amazon tablet will arrive in early 2012. That’s probably a good reason not to buy today’s newcomer, but I imagine it will sell in great numbers because of Amazon’s marketing clout.

I quite like the idea of a seven-inch tablet and do not agree wholeheartedly with Steve Jobs’ view. I love my iPad but I find it a bit big for day-to-day use. I don’t use it much for video and I certainly don’t play games, so maybe my view is skewed. The question is: Will the Kindle Fire spontaneously combust before Christmas?

  1. No I dont think it will combust. It will serve an audience to consume media and entertainment but may not want more than that. I wonder though if people will buy it and assume it will do all an iPad does? Or will people buy it as a second device
