Petition: Allow airplane-mode device use during takeoff and landing

At last a sensible word on the long-festering pettiness of forcing airline passengers to turn off all devices during takeoff and landing: A petition to be signed.  If a device has no wireless enabled, how can it be a threat to safety? Every day thousands of aircraft take off and land with at least one wireless-enabled device sitting in a bag in the luggage rack. Despite this there have been no resulting safety incidents. Provided I switch on airplane mode I should be able to read my Kindle, iPhone or iPad even during takeoff. For US residents, this is where you can sign the petition:
