iOS Multitasking Bar: Running apps, memory hogs or what?

I confess I have never quite understood what happens to all those recent apps cluttering up the multitasking bar on iPhone and iPad. Are they still running in background? Are they using memory? Are they closed but still there as a convenient place to show your most-used apps? It seems I’m not the only one confused, but help is here. Fraser Speirs gives us all the facts in his exhaustive article, Misconceptions About iOS Multitasking. This should be required reading before you next advise your friends on memory hoggery and other perceived perils of having too many apps on the multitasking bar.
