I love London because it is full of wonderful characters such as artist George Skeggs who lives in Covent Garden and is often to be spotted in the Soho or Bloomsbury areas. I have snapped him several times in the past, in a variety of stylist outfits. Today I spotted him in Museum Street and we had a nice chat and It seems, unsurprisingly, that he is in demand for photo shoots.
Unusually, I was lurking with a zoom lens. I don’t usually use zooms, being a prime sort of guy. But it was raining and I was prompted to try out Fujinon’s weather-resistant 18-135mm lens on the test X-T1. It was coping well with the drizzle when I found George enjoying a cappuccino.
Because of the zoom I was able quickly to get a wide-angle and a close up portrait all without moving a step. It’s a novelty for one who is used to zooming with his feet in true street photographer style. Despite this and the state-of-the-art five-axis stabilisation in this lens, I was a little disappointed in the sharpness, certainly when compared with my favourite Leica 50mm Summilux. But, then, it is a zoom and it was my first outing. Practice makes perfect
