Every day I pass some pub or other sporting a witty blackboard or a boastful menu. “Best Fish & Chips” in London and “Best Sunday Roast on the Thames” are good old faithfuls. I suppose, indeed I know, they cannot all be the best. But who prepares them—the signs, I mean, not the roasts? Today I found out. This is Geoff, Michelangelo of the pub sign, hard at work at the quaint Black Lion in Hammersmith. It looks good, so I’d better sample it next Sunday even though I know full well it is probably an empty boast. Geoff flits all over the South East titivating tired old hoardings designed to bring in the punters. So now we know.
