This year’s Oskar Barnack Award has moved into the entry stage which extends from the beginning of March to April 10. Entrants must submit a self-contained series of between ten and twelve images documenting the interaction between people and their environment in a “creative and ground-breaking style”.

Among the five jurists for the 2017 event with be the renowned Leica collector Douglas So, founder of the unique F11 Foto Museum located at No.11 Yuk Sau Street in Hong Kong’s Happy Valley. I paid a visit on my last visit to Hong Kong and was greatly impressed by the surroundings and the Leica theme throughout. Sadly, at the time Douglas’s Leica collection was absent while the space was used for another exhibition, including an extensive display of instant cameras.

The museum occupies an outstanding three-story Art Deco building which Douglas has restored to its original Colonial grandeur. It retains many of the original design motifs but adds a number of modern themes, including door handles replicating a Leica film-camera advance lever.

While retaining all the original Art Deco features, the F11 Museum features some amazing design features, not least of which is this Leica-inspired film-advance lever/shutter-speed door lock (Leica Q)

If you are planning to visit Hong Kong it’s worth making an appointment for a tour of the museum. It isn’t generally open to the public but there are opportunities to join special previews, often hosted by the knowledgeable Timm Wong.
