Leica M10: Thorsten takes a first look at the latest M

Danish photographer and noted Leica expert, Thorsten von Overgaard, has completed his initial look at the M10 and discusses it in comparison with the M240 and M9. I am sure my friend Evris Papanikolas of TieHerUp straps will be delighted to see Thorsten is such a fan of the latest Leica M10 strap with the red links. You can find more details on the M10 on Thorsten’s web site.

    • You’re not the only one, Andrew. I was chatting to a good friend only last week. He goes through a lot of cameras but he’s sold off the M240, M9 and M-D and now has just one digital M, the M262. I loved this camera when I borrowed it from Leica but never actually owned one.

      • I actually bought mine in January after your and other reviews convinced me that sensor technology was good enough to not matter for my amateur photography. My film M has always been the M5, so I also have no great attachment to the M6 profile.

I can see the M-D being with me for quite a while. Of course if I was buying new today I would opt for the M10, but I bought my M-D gently used at a very nice discount from MSRP, so I’m still delighted with my choice.

I actually just returned from a little over two weeks in the U.K. and found the M-D to be the perfect companion there, even when using the Noctilux wide-open.

        • Glad you are happy with the M-D. If it hadn’t been for the arrival of the M10 I would have stuck with the M-D. But I felt I needed to move on in the interests of readers (at least that’s my excuse). If they produced an M10-D, which they surely will, I would be sorely tempted. In the meantime, the M10 with its dedicated ISO dial is a good compromise.

  1. All a bit academic until Leica can actually supply the camera to its loyal customers. We already know the features of the new camera. I will probably just ask Paul Glendell to make a case for the M10 with a matching strap and just use the one that comes with the camera until that is available. Meanwhile there are plenty of readily available vintage Leicas to collect.

    • The cameras are trickling through but I know there has been a bigger demand for this camera than for previous versions. If you’d ordered on announcement day I suspect you might have had your camera by now — there was a great flood of orders following the positive response.

I’ve been working with Paul on the design of his new case for the M10 and your comment reminds me to have a further chat with him.

      • Thanks Mike. I look forward to a great case from Paul with input from yourself. I ordered about a week after the launch which is just over 3 months ago.
