Although I’ve not owned the Leica V-Lux (one of the few current Leicas other than the S that I haven’t used extensively), I’ve had a great respect for its versatility and performance ever since I reviewed the camera in 2014. Image quality belies the relatively small one-inch sensor and the 25-400mm zoom range turns this into a compact, friendly and uncomplaining travel companion. I know several Leica fans who swear by the V-Lux, including Red Dot Cameras’ Ivor Cooper and talented street photographer David Lewis Baker. I’ve been tempted myself, but somehow just never got round to it.
Perhaps, then, this new Explorer Kit will change my mind. Leica pitches the V-Lux at travellers and wildlife/sports photographers and the new set includes some extra goodies to speed these enthusiasts on their way. In addition to the camera, you get an ONA black-nylon Bowery system bag and a red Leica rope strap, designed by COOPH. Made from climbing rope material, the strap will be welcomed by explorers everywhere. Just the job in emergency. The V-Lux Explorer edition, which comes in a nice box, can be ordered from Red Dot Cameras and other Leica dealers. The price will be £1.110, including VAT (the camera alone sells for £940 so it’s a good deal).

Very glad to read of this, Mike. I’ve had the V-Lux 1 for five or six years now, and I’ve been consistently impressed by its image quality from a 10MP 1/1.8" CCD sensor (better than the following models), its 400mm zoom and by its handling. Less sophisticated than my Sony RX10, but I’ve done some side-by-side image comparisons, and zoom for zoom the V-Lux 1 produces images which to my eyes are as pleasing (and as sharp up to A4 print). It also has an entirely internal focussing zoom, so there are no dust problems lurking, and that is why I decided not to go for the new V-Lux. Maybe I should reconsider and sell both the RX10 and the V-Lux 1 to part finance this tantalising offer!?
Tantalising indeed….. The only snag is that special editions and special offers sometimes presage an update in a model line. Who knows. But, seriously, Ivor Cooper at Red Dot thinks this is a actually quite a good deal provided you want the £300 bag strap combo.
