Demand for the latest M10 has given a boost to Leica Camera’a UK subsidiary, based in Bruton Place, Mayfair. In 2017 Leica UK had a 21% increase in turnover to £14.5m on the back of the new M3-sized digital M. This exceeded Leica’s overall global growth of six percent. Leica’s worldwide growth came against a downward trend for the camera industry as a whole.
The M10 has been on backorder for the whole of 2017 and even now it is difficult to just walk in and buy one. It has had an overwhelmingly positive reception from the technical press and, clearly, Leica enthusiasts are impressed.
With its physical ISO dial and back-to-basics approach to menus, controls (and lack of video), not to mention the thinner body reminiscent of the original M3, the M10 is the digital Leica that most enthusiasts have been waiting for. It is little surprise, therefore, that the great demand has boosted Leica’s prospects overall. But it is rather surprising that Britain seems to be leading the way in its enthusiastic reception of the camera.
