Kiana Hayeri and Valentin Goppel top the 2022 Leica Oskar Barnack Award

The two winners of this yearโ€™s 42nd Leica Oskar Barnack Award are Iranian-Canadian Kiana Hayeri for her series, โ€œWritten on the Ice, Left in the Sunโ€, and Valentin Goppel for โ€œBetween the Yearsโ€.

Kiana Hayeri, who secured the main award, was proposed by no fewer than three nominators. The Newcomer award is for German photographer Valentin Goppel, whose work was submitted by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover.

The two winning series and the finalistsโ€™ photographic projects are on display at the Ernst Leitz Museum in Wetzlar until January 2023. The attached press release details the award winners and their projects.

Commenting on the 2022 Leica Barnack Awards, Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director and Chief Representative of Leica Galleries International, congratulated the winners: โ€œOnce again this year, we were impressed by the diversity and high quality of the series submitted. It was particularly delightful to see the man young participants, as well as the higher proportion of woman photographers.โ€

She paid special thanks to the professional jury, which always kept the human touch at heart and to all the dedicated nominators from around the world.โ€

Kiana Hayeri receives โ‚ฌ40,000 and Leica camera equipment worth โ‚ฌ10,000. Valentin Goppel receives โ‚ฌ10,000 and a Leica Q2.
