The two winners of this year’s 42nd Leica Oskar Barnack Award are Iranian-Canadian Kiana Hayeri for her series, “Written on the Ice, Left in the Sun”, and Valentin Goppel for “Between the Years”.

A winning entry from Kiana Hayeri

Kiana Hayeri, who secured the main award, was proposed by no fewer than three nominators. The Newcomer award is for German photographer Valentin Goppel, whose work was submitted by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover.

The two winning series and the finalists’ photographic projects are on display at the Ernst Leitz Museum in Wetzlar until January 2023. The attached press release details the award winners and their projects.

Commenting on the 2022 Leica Barnack Awards, Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director and Chief Representative of Leica Galleries International, congratulated the winners: “Once again this year, we were impressed by the diversity and high quality of the series submitted. It was particularly delightful to see the man young participants, as well as the higher proportion of woman photographers.”

She paid special thanks to the professional jury, which always kept the human touch at heart and to all the dedicated nominators from around the world.”

Between the Years: Valentin Goppel

Kiana Hayeri receives €40,000 and Leica camera equipment worth €10,000. Valentin Goppel receives €10,000 and a Leica Q2.
