Panasonic’s new Lumix S 28-200 is claimed to be the world’s smallest and lightest long zoom lens. The Lumix S 28-200mm F4-7.1 Macro O.I.S lens is based on the L-Mount standard and is compatible with Panasonic, Leica and Sigma bodies. With a total length of 93.4mm (3.57in) and a modest weight of 413g (14.57oz) the lens is compact and light enough to complement even the smaller L-Mount bodies, such as the Lumix S5II. The first wide-to-tele zoom for the Lumix S Series line-up, the lens will be available at the end of April for around $899 (before tax) in the USA and £899 (including tax) in the UK.

Lumix S 28-200: One lens for all
According to Panasonic, the new lens delivers outstanding imaging performance and stunning bokeh. It is capable of half life-size macro shooting and close-up photography from just 30mm between the end of the lens and the subject.
As an all-in-one lens for tasks from landscape to portrait and macro, the Lumix S 28-200 meets a demand from photographers for a cost-effective solution where ultimate speed is sacrificed in the interests of size and weight. Nevertheless, Panasonic makes some ambitious performance claims, and it will be interesting to see how it performs in the hands of reviewers.
Here at Macfilos, we have been impressed with the performance of other cost-conscious Lumix S lenses, such as the wonderful little 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 and the rather stunning 50mm f/1.8 prime. So hopes are high for the newcomer.
The new lens offers high-speed and quiet autofocus, while the five-axis Dual I.S (when used with compatible cameras) permits up to 6.5 stops of correction. The lens also offers micro-step aperture control for smooth exposure changes, as well as the ability to choose between linear or non-linear focus ring settings. Comprising 17 optical elements in 13 groups, the Lumix S 28-200 features a single aspherical lens, four ED lenses and a UHR element.
