Leica announces limited edition M6 Leitz Auction set in black finish

The new M6 Leitz Auction set is available from today, but you’d better be quick off the mark. Only 20 sets have been produced for the world market and are being sold direct by Leitz Camera Classics in Vienna. The price tag, if you are lucky enough to bag one, is €25,980, including VAT.

Leica Camera developed this extraordinary set in cooperation with Leitz Photographica Auction. It includes a custom Leica M6 and a special edition of the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH, both finished in gloss black.

The Leitz Photographica Auction is one of the world’s most renowned auctions of vintage cameras, lenses, and accessories. The M6 Leitz Auction set includes the Leitz logo made of solid gold, specially prepared by a goldsmith in Wetzlar, Germany. The camera is covered in a real wood armouring made of walnut veneer. The unique design is complemented by engravings in gold and red.

The M6 Leitz Auction set is limited to 20 pieces. In addition to the camera and the special Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 lens, the set also includes a lens cap, body cap and lens hood. The accessories also come in a glossy black paint finish and are paired with a custom-made strap made from smooth black leather and a certificate of authenticity. The elegant packaging, with a golden Leitz logo, adds an extra touch of character to this rare collectors’ item.

The 20 sets are now available from Leitz Classic Vienna at a cost of €25,980, including tax.

  1. Mike, I dunno. Surely the only thing they are definitely not making any more of, (barring the polder, and its like, which comes under the heading of ‘reclaimed’) is land? Everything, that was here billions of years ago, is still here, there is nothing that is entirely new.

I am guessing that your home (the place where you actually live) has increased in value far more substantially than any of the collectible kit within its walls. I accept that all the time that you are breathing, it is your home, rather than an investment.

Notwithstanding, surely the purpose of a camera is to produce snaps?

Or perhaps, I am merely a (financially embarrassed and ever so slightly cynical) snapper, who has helped all of his kids find their independence through owning their own homes on land that they can bequeath to someone who survives them?

    • I can understand your sentiments, Stephen, but we have to see this special edition as an investment. With only 20 examples, it will certainly rise in value and, over a decade or so, could prove lucrative. I suppose it is aimed at people who have the money to spare, money to invest in a painting, a vintage Bentley, or a Brough-Superior motorcycle. Or, as an alternative to a savings account, even at the current 5% interest (less tax, of course) it makes sense. And I suspect many similar items such as this slip through the Capital Gains Tax net. It isn’t hard to envisage this set fetching twice the price at auction in only a few years.

  2. This is a beautiful design, solid gold logo is serious.
With the price of the chrome Noctilux multiple times its cost to purchase I can only imagine what a limited edition Black Paint copy will sell for on the secondary market.

    • Despite the price tag, this is likely to be a good investment. I suspect that the 20
pieces have already been earmarked for serious collectors even before today’s embargo time of 2pm.

      • I thought it was seriously overpriced until I realized it included a lens. It is the first limited edition that I would have been tempted to purchase- simply gorgeous. Definitely an investment!
