Classic Cases, owned by Leica enthusiast and talented photographer Paul Glendell, has an enviable reputation for producing traditionally styled half cases which provide superb protection and improved grip. The latest range is designed for the Leica M11 and comes in a variety of colours and the option of an additional screen protector.
Handcrafted in the workshop on Royal Deeside in Scotland, Classic Cases are made from leather produced by J & F.J Baker & Co in Colyton, Devonshire. The tannery has been run by the Baker family for six generations, but dates back to Roman times over 1,500 years ago. Today, Bakers is Britain’s last remaining oak bark tannery.
Attention to detail
With the sort of attention to detail that goes with hand craftsmanship, Classic Cases are designed to fit precisely. Paul Glendell was trained originally as a saddler and, he says, every case is unique. A thin aluminium layer is inserted between the leather to give added strength and protection from bumps and knocks.
The new M11 cases slip onto the camera and are secured by press-studded “ears” which ensure a tight fit and also help protect the edge of the camera top plate. The case is available in three colours, black, brown and rich brown. The soft pigskin lining, designed to offer maximum protection to the camera, can be specified in one of four colours, black, blue, green, and red. A further option is a leather cover for the rear screen.
Cost and ordering
The base price for the Classic Cases M11 model without screen cover is £210, including 20% Value Added Tax for British buyers. The version with screen cover adds another £35, to retail at £245.
Classic Cases also offer a range of complementary straps in a choice of braided or smooth leather finish.
