Why I chose the Leica Q3 Monochrom for black-and-white photography
My journey to ownership of the Leica Q3 Monochrom, a dedicated black-and-white camera, was punctuated with intermediate purchases of other Q-series cameras along the way. A family project provided the final impetus to sign up to a version with a dedicated monochrome sensor. When I did, the door to a new world of photography opened for me.
Lumix S1RII Review: Advanced AI autofocus and stunning image quality
Panasonic announced the Lumix S1RII in February 2025 as the successor to their flagship S1R. It provided numerous improvements over its predecessor, including a more compact form, similar to the S5-series, a 186g reduction in weight, and the addition of a more advanced phase-detect hybrid autofocus system with Advanced AI, compared to the contrast-detect focusing system of the S1R. But the big surprise was the sensor.

Our local arts commission recently invited submissions for an intriguing new exhibition: Rhythm and Form. Isn’t that a terrific theme? It leaves plenty of room for interpretation by artists working in any medium. I was determined to participate, but rather than submit individual photographs from my existing collection, I decided to take a different approach. Here was an opportunity to sharpen up my skill at masking in Photoshop.
Viltrox launches the Chip 28mm f/4.5 fixed-aperture, autofocus lens for L-Mount
Viltrox has announced the release of its latest lens, once again expanding the range of options available to L-Mount shooters. The Viltrox Chip 28mm f/4.5 is tiny for a full-frame, autofocus lens. This diminutive and inexpensive pancake lens is likely to be of interest to Lumix, and perhaps even Leica, photographers looking to minimize the weight of their every-day, walk-around kit.
Leicas of London: Highlights from the LSI Spring Shoot
The Leica Society International (LSI) Spring Shoot conference took place in London in mid-May, and the presentations, panels, and talks have been impressive and inspirational. Meeting many members of the Leica family, including people I have known for years only online, has been fantastic. It was my first ever LSI event and I wanted to say hello to as many attendees as possible. As an icebreaker, I decided to take photographs of some of the many Leicas that people had with them.
Mike’s Choice: Building a lightweight Fujifilm system
I am no stranger to Fujifilm. I maintained a comprehensive Fuji kit, alongside by M cameras and lenses, until as late as 2015. Then, the advent of the Leica T prompted me to change my APS-C allegiance. This turned out to be a monumental mistake, although I did enjoy the roller-coaster ride at the time, sampling all three Ts and the CL. I believed in Leica; I followed the company’s APS-C machinations uphill and down dale, innocently toddling into several of Wetzlar’s dead ends. I suspect many readers will have shared my journey.
